Back to the Nest
photo by: Ken W. Watson, 2011

A mother loon will leave the nest every so often to feed. In this case, I caught her as she was jumping back onto the nest (an artificial nest), which you can see has a single egg. Most commonly a loon will lay a pair of eggs - but depending on age and condition of the loon, it may only lay one.
