Turtle City
Basking Turtles
photo by: Ken W. Watson, 2004

The Rideau has a healthy population of turles as the 19+ turtles on this log will attest to. Turtles need to bask (lie in the sun on a dry surface) since it aids in the digestion of their food (the heat speeds up their metabolism). If there is only one basking log in the area, then the turtles need to share it. They seem to be pretty good at this, different sizes and breeds sharing the same basking site. In this photo, a single Painted Turtle (rounded shell - near the centre of the photo) is sharing the log with a host of Map Turtles.
