Moonlight on the Rideau photo by: Ken Watson, 2001 |
The Rideau can be very beautiful at night, especially under the light of a full moon. Moonlight on the Rideau is also the title of a song, written by W.R. Spence and first performed by the Perth Citizens' Band on Sunday, December 20, 1936. It was selected at the official theme song of the Rideau Canal's 150th Anniversary (1982). So .. sing along: "Silvery moon o'er the Rideau, Bright as bright can be, ....." When I think of the Rideau at night, it is a different song I hear - the haunting call of the loon. Loons are common on all the Rideau lakes and they are particularly vocal at night. |
