Beaver enjoying a snack photo by: Ken Watson, 2003 |
A juvenile beaver enjoying a mid-afternoon snack of some leafy green branches. The flat tail is poised just above the water, ready to slap down to warn other beavers of an approaching predator. The beaver is Canada's national symbol - industrious and hard working. It is these traits that sometimes gets it into trouble, since part of its industriousness is building dams. To do this, the beaver must chomp down trees (sometimes those near a cottage) and the resulting dam can flood access roads. But in the middle of the bush, beaver dams provide for marshy areas and ponds which sustain a large variety of wildlife. |
