Just Hanging Out photo by: Ken W. Watson, 2011 |
This is a juvenile hawk, most likely a Broad-winged Hawk (or possibly a Red-shouldered Hawk). Wildlife photography can be a challenge - quietly approaching with camera ready, getting just a few seconds to take a photo before the wildlife runs/flys off - or, in this case, it can be done while enjoying a beer on the deck and having the hawk land on a nearby cedar railing. It then patiently waited there while I got my camera, put on the telephoto lens and came back and took 50 photos of it - completely undisturbed by my presence. My thanks to Stew Hamill and Jacques Bouvier for the hawk type identification.
