Buttermilk Falls photo by: Ken W. Watson |
Not the original falls, this water is shooting out from flumes in a dam located at the outlet of Devil Lake. This water at one time powered mills at Bedford Mills (at the head of Loon Lake on the Rideau). Two men, Barnet and Legg, built a squatter sawmill at Bedford Mills in about 1829, powered by the water of Buttermilk Falls. In 1831, Benjamin Tett obtained the water rights (the "mill seat") and continued to operate the sawmill.
