Kayaks entering a lock

The locks on the Rideau are small compared to contemporary lock systems but when you're in a kayak, sitting just a few inches off the water, they can look pretty big.

However, as those who experience their first lock through soon learn, the lock staff are very friendly and are more than happy to help out. There is no rush, no pressure, locking through is a very simple procedure.

The usual first time response is "that was fun - can we do it again?" With 45 locks on the Rideau Canal plus 2 on the Tay Canal there are lots of "do it again" opportunities.
