Winter Crabs at Chaffeys Lock photo by: Ken W. Watson, 2005 |
For those that were expecting a photo of winter crustaceans, it should be noted that "crab" is a term for the hand winches used on the Rideau for opening and closing lock gates and sluice valves. The water in the area of the lock is free of ice because of the rapid flow of water through the weir. The crab on the left is the one used for opening the valve on the tunnel sluice, to let water into the lock. The crab in the centre is the one used to open and close the lock gate. |
