Combined Lock at Smiths Falls photo by: Ken Watson, 2003 |
This is a view directly into the combined lock at Smiths Falls, the highest lift in a single lock (26 feet - 7.9 m) on the entire Rideau system. The view is looking west, under the bridge that was the reason this lock was constructed in 1973/74 (see previous photo for details). To minimize turbulence in the lock, this lock, unlike all the other locks on the Rideau, introduces water through the floor of the lock so that it bubbles up, rather than creating potentially boat damaging currents. |
